Se esiste al mondo una band che può vantarsi di aver virtualmente definito l’espressione “rock alternativo” e soprattutto se cercate chi ha il merito di aver reso universale il cosiddetto indie rock non ci sono dubbi, il nome giusto è R.E.M. La band proveniente da Athens, tranquilla cittadina della Georgia, sud degli States ha già superato il quarto di secolo di attività e non sembra ancora avere voglia di smettere di deliziare le orecchie degli ormai milioni di fans in tutto il globo. Michael Stipe e compagni capiscono fin dall’inizio, nei primi anni 80, che l’unico modo per farsi conoscere è quello di suonare e suonare a più non posso, per cui prendono un furgone e girano per anni gli Stati Uniti suonando ovunque c’è un palco e una presa di corrente. Questa faticosa gavetta consente ai R.E.M. di affiatarsi ai massimi livelli e con l’uscita dei dischi arriva anche il successo, prima a livello underground poi, grazie ad album memorabili e a tanto duro lavoro, anche a livelli commerciali impensabili per una rock band che ha avuto la sfacciataggine di mettersi idealmente al crocevia tra rock alternativo e mainstream. Il segreto del successo dei R.E.M. è contenuto tutto nel loro sound inconfondibile costituito dal perfetto intrecciarsi di chitarre a volte armoniche a volte taglienti e di linee melodiche semplici e aggraziate, il tutto unito dal canto biascicato ma affascinante di Michael Stipe. Tra i 19 album che i R.E.M. hanno pubblicato nella loro carriera, ce ne sono alcuni che ci sentiamo di consigliarvi caldamente; due in particolare, “Life Rich Pageant” del 1986 e “Document” del 1987, sono quelli che ci stanno più a cuore perché sono forse i più ispirati, i più a fuoco e rappresentano il punto di partenza per entrare nel “Suono R.E.M.”. Molto ben riusciti sono anche “Green” (1988, il primo per una major), “Automatic For The People” (1992) e “New Adventures In Hi Fi” (1996), mentre il disco che ha segnato la loro carriera vendendo oltre 16 milioni di copie è “Out Of Time” (1991). La carriera dei R.E.M. ha avuto la fortuna di arrivare fino ai giorni nostri con poche ombre e moltissime luci e nonostante l’età ormai matura dei musicisti ci arrivano ogni anno segnali che nelle vene di questa straordinaria band scorre ancora sangue fresco e non è ancora giunto il momento di mettere la parola fine ad un’esperienza che recuperando la tradizione folk americana e filtrandola con la new wave e le melodie del pop ha segnato la storia del rock degli ultimi trent’anni.
