Apriamo questo primo e nuovo appuntamento settimanale parlando di una band che nel Regno Unito viene considerata per importanza seconda solamente ai Beatles. Sono passati ben 22 anni dal loro scioglimento, ma ancora gli Smiths infiammano i cuori di tantissime persone in tutto il mondo. La band si forma nel 1982 a Manchester, città che ha sempre dato i natali a tantissimi gruppi di notevole importanza che hanno influenzato la musica inglese fino ai giorni nostri. Solitamente in un gruppo uno dei componenti assume il ruolo di leader sia per quanto riguarda i testi sia per la musica; negli Smiths, invece sono due le teste pensanti, Steven Patrick Morrissey e Johnny Marr, rispettivamente cantante e chitarrista. Saranno questi due baldi giovani a formare un incredibile binomio che fece subito pensare a quello tra Lennon e McCartney e che in soli cinque anni partorì splendide gemme di pop rock e testi molto originali, sempre ironici e dolenti , che sembravano poesia tradotta in musica. Nel 1984 esce il loro primo album omonimo e subito si capisce che in Inghilterra da quel momento in ambito musicale le cose non saranno più le stesse. L’album è tutt’altro che perfetto, contiene molte ingenuità a livello di produzione, ma è anche pieno di canzoni che ancora oggi costituiscono dei piccoli classici come Hand In Glove o Reel Around The Fountain e diviene disco di platino in appena due settimane. Sulla trionfale scia dell’album di debutto e della miriade di Singoli che gli Smiths pubblicheranno in tutta la loro carriera (per la gioia di collezionisti di musica e feticisti come chi vi scrive) nel 1985 esce Meat Is Murder, l’elogio del vegetarianismo, un disco in cui per la prima volta i testi iniziano a spostarsi dalla dimensione individuale a quella sociale. L’enorme successo di pubblico e critica inizia però a creare tensioni interne che fortunatamente non impediscono di rendere il loro terzo album, The Queen Is Dead del 1986, il più ispirato, importante e apprezzato della loro carriera. Tutto sembra procedere per il meglio, ma sotto la cenere continua a covare la fiammella delle tensioni. Nel 1987 infatti, subito dopo l’uscita del loro quarto album, Strangeways Here We Come, Johnny Marr lascia gli Smiths. Dopo qualche momento di incertezza Morrissey dichiara chiusa la storia degli Smiths e proseguirà in una discreta carriera solistica, mentre Marr collaborerà con diversi artisti e si diletterà anche nelle vesti di produttore. Da molti anni si rincorrono voci di un loro ricongiungimento, ma Morrissey e Marr continuano a negare ogni possibilità. E visti i risultati penosi di alcune recenti reunion direi che mai una decisione sia stata più saggia. Noi, intanto, continuiamo ad amarli.
We open this first and new weekly appointment speaking of a band that in the United Kingdom you/he/she is only considered for second importance to the Beatles. The album is everything anything else other than perfect, it contains a lot of naivetys to level of production, but it is also full of songs that today they constitute still of the small classical as Hand In Glove or Reel Around The Fountain and it becomes disk of platinum in as soon as two weeks. On the triumphal wake of the album of debut and the myriad of Individuals that the Smiths will publish in all of their career (for the joy of collectors of music and fetishists as who writes you) in 1985 Meat Is Murder it goes out, the praise of the vegetarianism, a disk in which for the first time the texts begin to move from the individual dimension to that social. The enormous success of public and criticism it begins however to create inside tensions that you/they fortunately don't prevent from making their third album, The Queen Is 1986 Dead, the more inspired, important and appreciated of their career. In 1987 immediately after the exit of their fourth album, Strangeways Here We As, Johnny Marr leaves the Smiths. After some moment of uncertainty Morrissey declares closed the history of the Smiths and it will continue in a discreet career soloist, while Marr will collaborate with different artists and will also please him in the dresses of producer. From many years voices of one rejoining of theirs run after him, but Morrissey and Marr keep on denying every possibility. And seen the results pains of some recent reunions I would say that a decision has ever been wiser. We, meanwhile, continue to love them.
