Quando nel 1987 Nick Cave appare nelle scene finali de Il Cielo Sopra Berlino di Wim Venders, tanta acqua è già passata sotto i ponti della sua storia di artista. Questo incredibile australiano, infatti, è partito in quel di Melbourne nel 1978 con la sua prima band, i Boys Next Door poi diventati Birthday Party e da allora fino ad oggi ha continuato a stupirci con le sue ballate oscure, malinconiche, dolci e taglienti allo stesso modo, con i suoi testi pieni di riferimenti biblici e blasfemi, con la sua forza espressiva così brutale ma anche moderna che spesso ci ha investito come un treno in piena faccia. Nick Cave è sempre stato così, prendere o lasciare. Cave si porta dietro da sempre la fama di artista maledetto e per molti anni lo è stato, prima per scelta, poi come se stesse recitando il ruolo di rockstar che si consuma, brucia e muore. Ha capito prima che fosse troppo tardi che la sua ispirazione artistica non gli veniva dalle droghe, ma era dentro di lui e per questo è rimasto tra noi e si è ritagliato un ruolo nella musica di oggi che da molti (e dal sottoscritto) è considerato unico e imprescindibile. Oggi Nick Cave è un artista maturo ed equilibrato, ma ha conservato tutte le sue “vecchie peculiarità” e soprattutto dal vivo le mette tutte in bella mostra e ce ne fa dono. Quando nel 1982 i Birthday Party si sciolgono, Nick intraprende la carriera solista e si contorna di uno stuolo di musicisti, in parte provenienti dalla sua vecchia band, che chiama Bad Seeds. Questi musicisti, tra i quali spicca Blixa Bargeld, leader dei berlinesi Einsturzende neubauten, continueranno per anni a gravitare attorno a lui formando una specie di “famiglia”e contribuendo con i loro “cattivi semi” a mantenere rigogliosa la “mala pianta” Nick Cave. Tra i tanti stupendi dischi ci permettiamo di suggerirne alcuni a neofiti e curiosi: Murder Ballads (1996), un incredibile album che ruota tutto su storie che hanno per protagonisti degli assassini, Let love In (1994), il disco che ha costituito il maggior successo commerciale di Cave, impregnato di quella tristezza che contraddistingue la fine delle storie d’amore, il primo album From Her To Eternity (1984) e anche il progetto messo in piedi nel 2007 chiamato Grinderman in cui ci ha dato un’ulteriore dimostrazione di come una rockstar di mezza età, invece di starsene comodamente seduto in poltrona e vivere di rendita, prende in mano una chitarra e con la sua fedele compagnia di musicisti fuori dal comune riesce ancora a farci cadere dalle sedie. Nick Cave, prendere o lasciare? Noi prendiamo, eccome!
